Why Can Our WAT Reinforced Kraft Paper Tape be Recycled Along with Cardboard Boxes?

July 20, 2026

When choosing tape for corrugated cardboard boxes, the end-of-life recycling process is often overlooked. Traditional BOPP packaging tapes cause significant plastic pollution. While standard water-activated tapes reinforced with glass fiber address the plastic issue, they introduce new challenges. Glass fiber is inorganic and does not decompose during paper recycling, requiring separation at the paper mill. This structural reality makes it difficult for brands to claim their packaging is recyclable, exposing them to compliance risks and reputational damage. Our plant-based yarn-reinforced water-activated tape solves this problem by using plant-based fibers instead of glass fiber.

The basic structure of our water-activated tape relies on a kraft paper substrate and a starch-based adhesive. When the sealed cardboard box enters the recycling facility, it undergoes a repulping process. The starch-based adhesive dissolves completely in water, while the kraft paper substrate is incorporated into the recyclable fiber stream. The difference lies in the reinforcement layer. During the pulping stage, the plant-based yarn naturally decomposes along with the paper and adhesive. Unlike glass fiber, it does not require mechanical screening and separation. This ensures a completely organic material composition from packaging to the final recycled pulp.

This material shift offers a high degree of compliance. Governments worldwide are implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws and stringent plastic bans. Packaging containing inorganic glass fiber or plastic residues is typically classified as mixed waste, facing higher recycling taxes and processing fees. Because plant-based yarn-reinforced tape seamlessly integrates into standard paper recycling streams without leaving inorganic contaminants, this packaging is classified as pure paper. This proactive material choice helps brands minimize future compliance costs and meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations without increasing operational friction.

For brand image, consumers demand truly sustainable packaging. If a brand advertises its cartons as recyclable but uses glass fiber-reinforced tape, it creates recycling problems for consumers when inorganic residues are identified. Using fully organic, plant-based yarn-reinforced materials allows brands to confidently label their packaging as recyclable or compostable. This proven claim protects brand reputation and meets consumer expectations.

This tape is not only compliant and environmentally friendly but also suitable for heavy-duty applications. When used in automated systems such as the KN-366Hi dispenser or the 1721R carton sealer, this tape provides the necessary packaging speed and strength while solidifying a brand's compliance and reputation.
