Comparing tape by price per roll is how shippers overpay. A cheaper roll that needs two strips per carton, stalls the case sealer, or lets go in a cold warehouse costs more per sealed carton than the “expensive” alternative. Cost per sealed carton is the only honest comparison. Here is how to run it for the two dominant options: water-activated kraft tape (WAT) and BOPP pressure-sensitive tape.
1. Tape per carton. WAT typically seals with one strip and bonds into the board fibers; BOPP often needs a full H-seal — three strips — on heavy or recycled cartons. Count strips per carton, not price per roll.
2. Application. BOPP runs on hand dispensers and the standard case sealers you already own. WAT needs a water-activated dispenser: modest equipment cost, comparable speed on powered units, slightly slower by hand.
3. Failure and rework. Every reopened carton costs fresh tape, labor, and line time. Measure your current failures per thousand cartons before comparing — this line item decides more contests than tape price does.
4. Tamper evidence. WAT fuses with the corrugated fiber and cannot be peeled and resealed invisibly. If you ship high-value goods, one prevented pilferage pays for a lot of tape.
5. End of life. Kraft WAT recycles with the carton in the paper stream. BOPP film must be separated from the board. Where extended producer responsibility (EPR) fees apply, the difference shows up on the invoice.

Add it up per carton: tape cost + (seconds of labor × labor rate) + (failure rate × rework cost) + packaging and EPR fees. At a few hundred cartons a day, the winner of this calculation rarely matches the winner of the price-per-roll ranking. That gap is the money most shippers leave on the table.
